At some point, after Michelle and I were on to the third bottle of rosé, and my shoulders were singed with sunlight, someone passed around a bowl of watermelon slices. This was a perfect touch—the events director in me was very pleased. My best friend’s roommates had set up a smart mis en place for grilling, including an array of sliced cheese to be added to the burger sliders Matt was preparing (but, like I told Logan, “let’s make a grilled cheese.”), fresh veggies and lettuces (which Michelle ate fistfuls of, raw, her go-to move) and more chips than I could possibly eat. I grilled portobellos for Michi and I, red and yellow peppers, zucchini. Once the rosé was finished, I moved on to beer. And then it hit me, as day-drinking does. Coolly, I left the party, walking down India Street to the dock where I sailed across the east river, reticently wasted and happy. I love summer. What a perfect patio soirée.

Nebulous sky, low 50's, pinpricks of rain. Clouds hung low overhead, softening the daylight like dusk. In swimsuits, we eased through the lagoon. The water was a hotbed of minerals, a luminous aquamarine substance that's chalky, opaque. Steam rose up around us, mingling with the fog so that we could see only the silhouettes of others drifting. The warmth of the water, the hazy periphery, everything had a dreamlike quality. But this is a real place. You can go there, as we did, and unwind for hours after a transatlantic flight. Anyone who tells you that the Blue Lagoon is touristy and to be avoided is a sore loser; it might look crowded in this image, but it didn't feel that way. Even the children were serene, bobbing along in floaties. We got sparkling wine at the in-water bar, and lingered in every pocket of the sprawling hot spring. We sat in the dark domed sauna to relish the oppressive humidity. Although we eschewed massages (ok, they were booked), we dipped beneath the waterfall, wore a pair of face masks made of clay and algae indigenous to the waters, and dined among others in bathrobes for an actually-good first meal. Later in the afternoon, the clouds parted, sunlight dazzled the water, and we decided we didn't want another drink; this was more than enough. #bluelagoon #iceland #travel

Coming off the flight from New York, we drove direct to the Blue Lagoon, an endless geothermal pool somewhere in the southwest of the country. This was a brilliant decision. #bluelagoon #iceland #travel
